Empowering Women to Take Control

10 Mary Kay Myths Busted

Ever want the candid answers to some of the most difficult questions? Watch our “Candid Conversations” video with consultants at varying levels of business tell the raw, real truth about their Mary Kay experiences. Click Here to Watch

  1. Mary Kay is my Grandma’s makeup.
    • False. While yes, Mary Kay’s initial client base was middle-aged women…I mean, that is what happens when you start anything, you start with your sphere and it slowly branches out, we proudly offer products for all ages, including teens, young adults, women of all ages, and even men! Check out everything that MK has to offer at www.marykay.com/sstanizeski
  2. Mary Kay is a pyramid scheme.
    • Couldn’t be further than the truth. We ALL make 50% on products – no matter how long, position in the company, or how much you sell.
    • If you want to build a team, Mary Kay, Inc. pays you to mentor and help them – NOT the team members. Not one cent is given to the “recruiter” or “upline” or “enter-whatever-word-here” from the new team member.
  3. You have to go to meetings.
    • You never have to go to one meeting. Although, to be successful, it is in your best interest to be as involved in trainings and coaching with your Director as possible.
  4. You have to stock products.
    • Mary Kay will ship products straight to customers with a low shipping cost. If you’d like to offer customers the option to buy in the now, you can have products on hand. For example, having demos is usually a good idea. Otherwise, how are people going to try them? Do you have to? No. The cool thing is that it’s totally up to you.
  5. You have to throw parties.
    • Absolutely not. You do you. There are many different ways to share the products. Virtual options, different platforms, hybrid appointments, in-person appointments, one on one sessions, small groups, large groups. You can utilize social media. You can be 100% off social media. The most important thing is to identify how you might feel most comfortable and then get training on how to most effectively pursue that path….and that is exactly what I teach you.
  6. You have to wear makeup and know about skincare.
    • I knew nothing about any of it. I tried the products, fell in love, respected the business plan, and BOOM! Here I am.
Side note: I don’t wear makeup every day. I wear makeup when I want to. I’ve never been pressured to do a face or put myself together by anyone.
  7. You have to recruit.
    • No. You make your 50% whether or not you want to help women with their businesses.
    • I will say that helping women build businesses and giving them that opportunity becomes super awesome.
  8. It takes a lot of money to start.
    • $30 (as of 2/2022). Full disclosure: Mary Kay is not in the business of giving people products at 50% with a $30 fee. It makes no sense to make no cents. That’s a perk of a Mary Kay business owner. To encourage women to build businesses, you will need to buy $225 (wholesale) to become “active” in your own business. None of that has to come out of your own pocket if you don’t have it. Do a launch and pre-sell. There. Done. That buys you 3 months of active status. More information below…
  9. You have to use social media.
    • Nope. I can guarantee that if you choose to pick up the phone and talk to them in person that you will be able to help more women with their skin using Mary Kay products.
  10. Quotes of excuses that have come out of my mouth:
    • “I can’t sell a banana to a monkey!”
    • “I can’t sell all of that makeup if I don’t wear it.”
    • “It’s not part of my personality.”
    • “I don’t want to be pushy and icky.”
    • “I’m too shy!”

What would you do with the opportunity?

  • Extra income
    • Pay a car bill or replace your salary, the amount you make is a direct effect of the productive time you put in. I know people who have a business just to get products for themselves, friends and family; as well as people who support their entire family; as well as people who do this entirely for fun while being a CFO of a large company. It’s completely customizable.
    • You make 50% profit on every product sold throughout your Mary Kay business’ life.
  • Flexibility
    • Work from home or on the road and have your business ebb and flow with your life. Have Mary Kay send products to your customers on your behalf, or have a few things on hand to help customers in the now.
  • Create something of your own
    • Enjoy the independence and freedom to express yourself and work for yourself.
  • Build confidence
    • Step out of your comfort zone and turn vulnerability into strength with a team behind you.
  • Prizes and jewelry galore! Let’s chat about this one for a sec because I sometimes hear a lot of push back about how former consultants felt pressured to “buy more” to hit a level. Here’s the thing: Remember how I said it’s a business? If you tell your director or mentor that you want to achieve “xyz”, she will help you get there. She will encourage you, tell you how far away you are from achieving different milestones or challenges and help motivate and inspire you. You have to be 100% upfront with your mentor or director about what you want, especially if that changes. I will never be upset or disappointed in you and you are never wasting my time. My job is to serve you where you are. In order to do that effectively, I need to know when something changes or puts you on a different path. We can’t get in our feels about this and need to allow for growth and change. Mary Kay will fit into your life whether you are achieving big things or small things, but you can’t point the finger at the one who is trying to help you grow and build. I’m never going to push you to just “buy more product” and if you’re in a place where you are not selling, then you will not achieve. We have to be 100% ok with where ever we find ourselves in our businesses in each season of life.
  • Find community
    • Our pink family steps up, helps, and supports women in all aspects of life. We exchange ideas and work together while never competing.
  • Be part of something bigger than yourself
    • Even though you will own your own business, Mary Kay is behind you every part of the way. For close to 60 years they’ve been instrumental in the network marketing world.
    • Mary Kay uses EU standards of ingredients, banning 1,328 ingredients, rather than the FDA banning only 11.
    • Mary Kay is active in almost 40 countries world-wide.
    • Mary Kay Ash Foundation donates millions to domestic violence.
    • Mary Kay has made significant and surprising steps to becoming environmentally responsible.
    • So much more!

But really?

I’m a person who is completely transparent. Starting a Mary Kay business is starting a business in direct sales. You will be reaching out and offering help to all sorts of women, authentically. It is important to be yourself, to learn about the skincare and beauty world, and to find confidence in doing that.

How much do you make? Every single Mary Kay beauty consultant makes 50% on products. If you sell a mascara for $16, you make $8. This is true whether you’re a National Sales Director making a few hundred thousand per year, or you’re purchasing your first product.
If you’d like to build a team and mentor/help women with their businesses, Mary Kay will pay you to do that. For example, if you become part of my team, we both make 50% on products. Mary Kay will pay me to mentor you and help you build a successful business. Not one dime will ever come out of your pocket to pay me. This business model is unique and has been successful for many people over the course of many years. Please ask for the compensation plan so you can take a real hard look so you’re more informed!

IT IS NOT A PYRAMID SCHEME. Period.

Is it EFFORT? Yes. What you make is what you put in. If you want to sit back and wait for people to come to you, you won’t make a dime. If you actively participate, implement, and follow through with ideas that have been brainstormed and will work for you, you can make quite a bit of money. As with any new job, there’s a learning curve that takes time and patience. Knowing how and when to spend your time will be crucial, and that, in itself, can take time!
Play in your strengths and use them to your benefit – whatever they are! Take the trainings and strategies and use them in a way to help yourself kick butt out there!
I’d like to remind you that building a business – any business – takes time. You will not be a millionaire overnight. It will take time to build a strong client base. How long? Well, that’s up to you.

Is there support? Yes. There’s as much support as you’re willing to receive. From me. From the company. From other’s that voluntarily train and share topics and ideas. Again, we’ll meet you where you’re at. It’s up to you how often and how seriously you want to take it. All of the support and training is FREE. Trainings from Mary Kay, personal coaching and training from me is all part of the package!

Can you start with nothing other than the starting package?? After purchasing the starter kit ($30 as of 2/2022), not another dime is needed. Will you need to be extra cautious and strategic to be able to do it? Yes. Is it possible? Yes, I have personal team members who’ve done just this. If you’ve got a little cash to invest then can have some more flexibility in the business decisions you make, but it’s not absolutely necessary.
FULL TRANSPARENCY: $30 is to get a website and ProPay account which is how we process credit card purchases of products from clients. Mary Kay, in itself, is a business. They’re in business to sell product and create millions of businesses for women. It does not make sense to not make cents. If all you had to do to get 50% off of products is give them $30, then it’s not much of an opportunity. 50% off for personal use is a perk. If you’re looking for a CATCH, here’s as close to it as you’re going to come. To encourage us to run businesses there’s a requirement to make a $225 (wholesale) purchase from Mary Kay to become “active” and able to purchase – every 3 months. That has never been an issue for me as I am always building my customer base, who are happily purchasing game-changing products for themselves. If your plan is JUST personal use, then that’s not a business and won’t keep you in the “active” status very long. We need and love our customers, so just be a customer!!
What happens if you go “inactive”? Nothing. Nada. Start back up when you’re ready!

There is no quota. You do not report how much you sell or need to give anything to the company. How much you want to sell is up to you. The only business requirement is making a $225 (wholesale) order every 3 months. If you’re actually putting in the effort to run a business, that’s not hard to do. Honestly, if you’re a loyal MK user, this shouldn’t be an issue, either.

But I don’t want to be icky! Then don’t! Is it icky to watch commercials? Is it icky of businesses to put help-wanted signs on their front doors? Is it icky to tell friends about stuff you love? NO!! It’s not. If you’re icky about it, it will be icky. If you’re yourself, it won’t. It’s the biggest hangup people have and it’s completely misplaced. For example: “Do you want to try my chips? They taste great!” You just successfully sold a bag of chips for a company. Period.

There will be ups and downs. The hardest part is not quitting. You will doubt yourself. It will be hard to find new balances. You will be pushed out of your comfort zone. Your life will take unexpected turns. Can you take a break? Yes!
